Remember always that better hides are used for better leathers, as pure aniline and full top grain leathers, and lower quality hides are for corrected leathers, fully protected, buffed and pigmented leathers.
TOP GRAIN:When hides (cow, bull, horse, buffalo, elk) arrives into tannery, these are shared, "split" in layers, the top called TOP GRAIN, the centre and bottom, SPLIT. Split is the underneath layer of the hide, "split" from the top grain, is thicker and stiffer than top grain, and is usually used for shoes or garments, and some manufacturers use it combined with top grain for low price upholstery. SofaLeather uses only top grain leather to upholster its items.
CORRECTED: As leather has a Natural origin, it may has Natural imperfections (Nature's Signature) such as, scratches and scars, wire marks, stretch and vein marks, insect bites, and etc. When leather has too many of these signatures, it is buffed or sanded "corrected" in order to minimize the appearance of gross surface imperfections. The correction process removes some of the natural grain. The more is the correction, the lower the leather price is.
PIGMENTED: Fact of giving artificial colour to leather.
EMBOSSED: The process of correcting, obliterates natural grain and markings that makes hides naturally beautiful. Marking can be reintroduced by embossing, printing or snuffing the leather under heat or high pressure rollers producing unique patterned effects such as ostrich, turtle, alligator, or lizard.
FULL GRAIN:Top grain leathers that have not been corrected in any way, allowing the natural markings and character of the leather to show through. Only 25% of hides may be used to obtain full top grain upholstery leather.
SEMI-ANILINE: Top grain leathers that have been aniline dyed and given a slight top coat of finish. Only 15% of hides are profitable for this quality.
PURE ANILINE: It is generally accepted that only five percent of the world's hide supply is of high enough quality for pure aniline upholstery leather, so it must be considered as the premier grade of leather. Aniline dyeing is the process of soaking the hides in transparent aniline dyes which color or shades the hides without obscuring the natural grain of the leather. The hides are dyed all the way through with no pigmented top coat. Are luxurious and super soft to the hand, no two hides of the small percentage available are the same, in fact, they vary greatly in appearance. This leather matures beautifully, and is perfect for people who insist on the best and most natural leathers.
